It has been talked about for a long time double standards in food products - that is, that in our country we eat lower quality goodsthan in other European citizens. This provoked violent reactions in the society, many measures were promised, but it seemed that this topic stopped being talked about and acted upon.
And the latest survey of Active Users showed it. The association found that in Bulgaria we eat chocolate of poor quality.
27 brands were studied, of which only 2 meet European requirements - that is, their chocolate contains more than 35% cocoa mass. According to the consumer organization, the remaining 25 can be considered milk chocolate.
In an interview with bTV, Sergei Ivanov from Active Consumers explained that we are buying budget chocolate. The association found that producers are emphasizing cheap raw materials such as sugar and palm oil, which are much cheaper than cocoa. The law allows the use of up to 5% palm oil, but Active consumers suspect that in a large percentage of cases this is not observed.
Ivanov claims that the chocolates are assembled from semi-finished products. According to him, cheaper technological additives such as E476, which is made from castor oil, are added to these products.
According to the original recipes, soy lecithin should be used, but it turns out that none of the 27 studied chocolate this is not observed.
The fact that this is not done leads to the following shocking conclusion - chocolate can be mixed in any store - without special equipment.
Sergei Ivanov added that traces of nuts were also found in the chocolate products. This in itself is also a problem, as it is often not indicated on the label, so it is possible for people with allergies to suffer. The expert claims that there are several such cases.
Another conclusion reached by Active Consumers is that in 22 of the 27 surveyed brands the amount of sugar is over 50%.
It turns out that in most chocolates, atypical raw materials such as lactose are added. In the products in which it is indicated that there is a liqueur, the presence of such a product has not been established.
The conclusion of the study is that we eat low-quality chocolate, assembled from cheap raw materials, which can be harmful to our health.
