In connection with the upcoming Easter holidays, the BFSA launched an action to inspect eggs and lamb, which are offered in retail chains and markets in our country.
The news was announced by the Minister of Agriculture and Food Desislava Taneva to FOCUS Radio.
The origin of the meat sold, as well as the eggs and milk distributed in our country will be checked.
Minister Taneva added that at the moment there are no registered cases of illegally sold meat, such as the abuse years ago of imported 20-year-old frozen meat from Ireland.
There is no risk of dangerous eggs on the market, although earlier this month the Bulgarian Union of Poultry Breeders warned about imported eggs, which are used in our trade network and have a changed expiration date.
However, the problem of substandard imported products requires more radical measures related to changes in the Food Act. It is hoped that the last groups working on this law will rule by the end of April. Changes are also envisaged in the supply of meat in retail outlets.
If the change is accepted, Bulgarian consumers will be informed whether a meat product is Bulgarian or imported, but also whether it is fresh, processed and what other manipulations it has undergone before reaching the store.
Taneva hopes that working groups and members of the National Assembly will reach a consensus on the Food Act so that it can be adopted and implemented effectively.
In the coming weeks, the Easter cakes and egg paints, which we traditionally buy before Easter, will also be checked.
Last year, during the Easter inspections of the Food Agency, 640 kilograms of food, 250 kilograms of frozen lamb, 30 lambs and 100 eggs were found and discarded.
