Just before the Easter holidays, resellers will inflate the prices of lamb. The news was announced by the chairman of the sheep breeders in Bulgaria Biser Chilingirov in front of Trud newspaper.
The purchase of hams and whole lambs from Bulgarian farmers has already begun. The lamb is transported to the processors, enterprises and fats in our country.
Currently, the price of lamb is offered between BGN 4.30 and 5 per kilogram of live weight. By Easter, however, the values will jump by at least 1 lev per kilogram.
Chilingirov added that many unscrupulous traders are trying to deceive resellers by lying with the scales.
The solution is for farmers to form associations so that they can offer larger quantities at a better price to processors and large retail chains, the expert said.
Consumers will feel the jump of the lamb especially in the whole hams. Their price per kilogram from BGN 13.20 will increase to BGN 17.20. The average price of a lamb shoulder will jump from BGN 12.50 per kilogram to BGN 15.84 per kilogram.
This year, too, there will be imports of lamb around the holidays, adds Simeon Karakolev, chairman of the National Sheep Breeding Association. According to him, some large chains in our country traditionally offer meat from Australia and New Zealand.
Many processors prefer to buy Romanian lambs because of their lower prices.
Before Easter, there will be increased imports of eggs from Poland. Much of the lamb for the Easter meal will also come from there.
