The homeland of buckwheat, cultivated by the Russian nation, is actually India, but it is a fact that it is less popular there for unknown reasons. Probably because for centuries it was considered food for the poor.

The truth is that buckwheat is rich in many valuable nutrients and is also an environmentally friendly product. No matter where you sow it, you will never see weeds around it, so you do not have to treat it with pesticides.

Nowadays, buckwheat is gaining more and more popularity, whether you find it under this name or under the Russian - buckwheat. Besides being very useful, if you learn how to prepare it, it can serve as an addition to soups, as a base for salads, for main dishes, for pastries and even for desserts.

Like rice, buckwheat is not difficult to prepare, and you should be aware of the following:

- After you have washed the buckwheat, it is good to leave it in a colander to drain, if possible in a sunny place;

- At cooking buckwheat it is good to choose a pot with a thick bottom and it is mandatory that its lid closes well. To make buckwheat pleasant to the taste, it must be steamed rather than boiled;

- The classic ratio of buckwheat to water is 1: 2, but if you want it to be more boiled and use it in the form of porridge (for example, as an additive to various vegetable purees), you can add more water;

- If you prepare buckwheat for adults, it is good to boil it in pre-salted water, but if you use it for baby food, it is better not to add salt;

- Buckwheat should be boiled on high heat for about 5 minutes, on medium heat - for about 7, and on the lowest heat - for about 3 minutes;

- After the buckwheat is cooked, remove it from the stove, but do not peel it off, but put a towel on its lid and let it rest for about 15 minutes;

- Depending on what you are going to cook with buckwheat, you can wash it with cold water. This way the grains will separate and will not look like porridge.
