The mushroom is one of the most beloved mushrooms in our country. Over 95 percent of this type of mushrooms in our country are imported from Poland.

For the processing of mushrooms produced in Poland, a technology is used that kills all bacteria on their surface. At the same time, however, bacteria remain inside them, which deteriorates their quality. Thus, visibly fresh and white mushrooms appear on the market, which are old inside. They are lower class, but on the other hand they are at a lower price, which makes them more sought after by local resellers.

The maximum shelf life of mushrooms is between 5 and 7 days. When stored at 2 to 4 degrees, the period is extended to a maximum of 10 days. However, mushrooms from Poland last more than 14 days. However, experts specify that after this period the mushrooms change visibly externally and tastefully, but still do not become toxic.

Between 5 and 10 tons of mushrooms from Poland arrive in Bulgaria every day. The Union of Mushroom Producers in Bulgaria has appealed to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food for support and protection of the Bulgarian mushroom producer. They want to impose requirements for minimum supplies in the food chains of Bulgarian products, as well as control of supplies from Poland.

Regarding the alleged case of mushroom poisoning a few days ago, they stated in their opinion that cultivated mushrooms could not in themselves be a poisonous product.

In order to determine the type and especially the cause of the poisoning, laboratory and medical tests must be awaited. If, however, the mushrooms prove to be the cause, their supply will have to be monitored by the food control authorities.
