Yellow grind / Helichrysum arenarium / is a perennial herbaceous plant of the Asteraceae family. The herb is also known as immortelle, stone flower, dried flower and wilted.
In France it is called Immortelle, and in Germany it is known as Sand-Strohblume, Ruhrkrautbluten and Gelben Katzenfochten. Yellow sage has a short woody underground stem, and its root is spindle-shaped with lateral roots.
The flowering stems of the plant are from 5 to 10 pieces, and they are usually straight and simple, reaching 40 to 60 cm in height. The leaves of the yellow smil are simple, back ovate to linear. The baskets of the plant are oval, up to 9 mm in diameter. They are collected in inflorescences of 5-30. The integumentary leaflets are yellowish and sometimes orange.
The yellow grind blooms from June to August. The herb can usually be found in sandy places, near a pool of water. It is most common along the Black Sea coast, northeastern Bulgaria and the Danube plain. It can be seen less often in Southeastern Bulgaria and Kyustendil region. Apart from Bulgaria, it also grows in Central and Eastern Europe.
Composition of yellow grind
As part of yellow grind the following flavonoids are included: kaempferol, apigenin, astralagin and helichrysine. The herb also contains anthocyanin dyes (salipurposide), tannins, bitter substances, essential oil and more.
Collection and storage of yellow smel
Herbal baskets of yellow immortelle / Flores Helichrysi, Flores Gnaphalii / are used for medicinal purposes. These parts of the plant are collected when it begins to bloom. The collected material is cleaned of debris and impurities, then spread in the sun to dry.
Even better results are obtained if the herb is dried in an oven at a temperature of up to 45 degrees. The dried plant must still have retained its yellow color. It does not have a special smell, but it has a bitter taste.
Benefits of yellow grind
After experiments it was proved that yellow grind stimulates bile secretion. As early as 1929, experimental experiments were performed on dogs, proving the healing efficacy of the herb. Eventually, it was found that the decoction or extract of the flowers of yellow sage stimulates the secretion of bile, gastric and pancreatic juice. Other studies were later performed.
They prove that the plant increases the tone of the bile and increases the cholesterol-cholate ratio. Scientists suggest that the action of the herb is due to the flavones contained in its flowers, which activate bile secretion, increase the cholesterol-cholate ratio and the content of bilirubin in the bile.
The alcoholic and chloroform extract of immortelle flowers in vitro inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and α-hemolytic streptococci. According to older information, the drug raises blood pressure. And after later experiments on cats, it was found that the colors of yellow grind act hypotensively. It also turns out that the flowers of the plant can be used successfully in the fight against chronic cholecystitis, cholangitis and cholelithiasis.
The herb has been shown to be an effective cholagogue. When using a decoction of the plant, vomiting decreases and even disappears. The discomfort in the area of the liver and gallbladder decreases and disappears, the enlarged liver decreases.
Sometimes even the improvement occurs on the third day of using the herbal liquid. In patients with jaundice, vomiting and nausea are stopped, pain is relieved, gas retention is expelled, and the yellowing of the skin and mucous membranes is reduced.
The yellow grind helps with stones and sand in the gallbladder, inflammation of the kidneys and bladder, urinary disorders, edema, rheumatism, neuralgia, impotence, sciatica, low blood pressure, some skin diseases and other diseases.
Folk medicine with yellow grind
In Bulgarian folk medicine, the decoction and infusion of the flowers of yellow immortelle are used as a cholagogue, diuretic and laxative.
To prepare a decoction of yellow immortelle, it is necessary to obtain 10-15 grams of the drug. The herb is placed in 300 ml of boiling water and after 3-4 minutes the mixture is removed from the stove. The cooled liquid is filtered. Take two tablespoons of it three times a day, thirty minutes before meals for two to three weeks.
If you want to prepare a decoction of yellow grind, take a tablespoon of flowers and pour them with a tea cup of boiling water. Allow the herb to simmer for thirty minutes. Take half a cup of the mixture twice a day, thirty minutes before eating.
Yellow grind oil
From yellow grind oil is produced. It has anti-inflammatory, analgesic, regenerating, rejuvenating, detoxifying and purifying effects.
