Sparkling wines we call all white, rosé or red wines that are produced as a result of the natural fermentation process of fresh grapes or of table wine, which has produced bubbles of carbon dioxide.

It can also be obtained by adding carbon dioxide by the method by which all carbonated beverages are made. The requirement is that at a temperature of 20 degrees the pressure in the bottle is at least three atmospheres. There are different types of sparkling wines and we will focus on them.

Types of sparkling wines according to the method of production

Sparkling wines can be natural and additionally carbonated. For sparkling wines, there are bubbles of carbon dioxide in the bottle. They are closed at the discretion of the winemakers in the bottle. Here are the differences between the two types of wine:

• Natural sparkling wines - resulting from natural alcoholic fermentation. They can be obtained from fresh grapes or from table wine. This is the so-called charm method. In it, the pearl bubbles are the result of secondary fermentation of table wine, but this is not done in each bottle separately, but in a large container, which is something like a huge bottle. There the process is like in an ordinary bottle. This makes it cheaper and saves time;

• Sparkling aerated wines - are obtained only from table wines by adding additional additional carbon dioxide to the bottle. They are not naturally sparkling wines, but are carbonated like soft drinks.

Known sparkling wines by region of production

Champagne

The most famous sparkling wine is champagne. It is the only type of such wine that is made from only three varieties of grapes - Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. This is a natural sparkling wine that is produced only in the Champagne region of France. The reason for sparkling only this wine is in the climate in this French region. It is quite cold there and the bottles have these special bubbles that the winemakers tried to eliminate at the beginning. They thought that the wines were defective because of the bubbles, because they did not realize that this was a natural process of aeration that occurs during fermentation. In cold weather in Champagne, this process is slower and when the wine is poured into the bottle beforehand, it is aerated. The glass must be thick so that the bottle itself does not explode. Champagne is so well known as a name today that the French are trying in every way to protect the name of the wine. It is forbidden in the EU to call other sparkling wines by that name.
