After the fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices, it turns out that a large part of the pork in the domestic markets is not Bulgarian production, but imported.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Food has registered a serious shortage of Bulgarian pork, which will require a serious import of crumbs from Germany and Spain.

In recent years, Bulgarian producers have failed to cover the needs of the pork market, which is why insignificant imports have taken place every year, mainly from Western European countries.

However, analyzes by the Ministry of Agriculture continue to show that the amount of pork is not enough.

According to the data of the National Statistical Institute from 2013, the imported pork and bacon in the country from the European Union was 110,700 tons, which is 5.7% more than the imported meat in 2012.

At the same time, the total export of pork and bacon for the past year was 2500 tons, which is 60.3% less than the export in 2012.

After Bulgaria became a member of the European Union, meat imports are mainly made between the member states of the union.

The main countries from which pork is supplied to Bulgaria are Spain and Germany, with nearly 48,000 tons of meat and bacon arriving annually from Western countries.

Large quantities of pork are also imported from Greece, Romania, Macedonia and Kazakhstan.

Last month, the European Union launched a lawsuit in the World Trade Organization seeking to ban the import of pork from Russia.

In 2014, no serious change in imports is forecast, as the demand for pork in the country is expected to remain at previous levels.

Domestic producers hope to supply the necessary quantities of pork this year, both for processing companies and large retail chains.

Expert analyzes also support the thesis that Bulgarian domestic production will be able to meet the demand needs and imports of pork will decrease over time.
