Legends about the magical effect of red beets on the human body have been told since ancient times. At the same time, it is one of the most neglected vegetables by Bulgarians.

Freshly squeezed red beet juice has the strongest positive effect. Recently, British scientists have discovered another useful property. 250 milliliters of it a day is enough to maintain normal blood pressure levels.

Daily intake of fruits and vegetables is extremely important for maintaining good and healthy condition of the body as a whole. However, the study, as well as its conclusions, do not confirm the unequivocal health benefits of a glass of beet juice a day.

From a scientific point of view, a glass of beet juice contains an average of 0.2 grams of nitrates. This amount is equal to that in a green salad, for example. As we know, already entering the body, nitrates are converted into a chemical called nitrite, and then into the blood into nitric oxide.

Nitrates are presumed to be harmful to the body. Therefore, scientists are extremely surprised to find that the resulting nitric oxide actually dilates blood vessels and improves blood supply.

There are many examples in history of how a harmful thing in small quantities actually works. So it is with beet juice. Minimal amounts of nitrate actually lead to great results. However, despite what has been established, it is still unknown whether what has been achieved can be maintained in the long run.

The study included 8 women and 7 men with blood pressure 140-159 mm Hg. Without being allowed to take any medications to fight hypertension, they drank 250 milliliters of beet juice or water a day.

Participants who consumed juice reduced both their systolic and diastolic blood pressure (upper and lower limits) by an average of 10 points. The effect appeared between the 3rd and 6th hour after ingestion, but remained present even after 24 hours.

The levels were maintained even after the nitrate content in the blood returned to its previous levels recorded before the consumption of the juice.
