Out of a total of 650 foodstuffs dangerous for consumption on our markets, the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency has registered that 490 of them are imported from our southern neighbor Turkey.
The news was announced by Dr. Sergey Ivanov from the Center for Food Biology to Bulgaria ON AIR.
The specialist advises Bulgarian consumers to always read the product label before paying for it, and they should be most careful when buying meat products.
There is a case when the Bulgarian state standard cannot be a guarantee for quality, as no one checks whether the natural ingredients in the product comply with the regulation, Ivanov announced.
According to him, this is among the responsibilities of the BFSA, but since the Agency does not have a laboratory for sufficiently accurate analysis, such an inspection turns out to be meaningless.
Sergei Ivanov himself shares that he does not trust products with the BDS label, as he knows that there are manufacturers who do not comply with the requirements.
Nutritionist Ognyan Simeonov, on the other hand, advises us to look mainly for farm products.
I have always told people that instead of buying the most expensive minced meat, they can take a regular veal or pork place from the nearest butcher's shop and grind it themselves.
Simeonov is also adamant that we should be careful when shopping for food, and not take the cheapest or the first thing that comes into our field of vision.
