Only two days after Minister Miroslav Naydenov assured the Bulgarian citizens that there are no imports of horse meat, 86 kg of lasagna with Bolognese sauce were banned by the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency.
A signal for possible presence of products containing horse meat, instead of the beef indicated on the label, was received on 15.02.2013. by means of a notification under the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF). Following an order from the Minister of Agriculture and Food, Mr. Naydenov, inspectors from the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) carried out an immediate inspection of one of the major food chains.
As a result of the inspection, they found the presence of 86 kilograms of suspicious lasagna. All quantities established so far have been withdrawn from the market and placed under foreclosure. Appropriate samples were taken and sent to a German laboratory to determine by DNA analysis whether the product in question contained horse meat.
The entire quantity of lasagna with dubious content was found in the stores of the Carrefour retail chain and was imported to the Bulgarian market from France. According to BFSA experts, no fault can be sought in the retail chain for the sale of the lasagna in question.
Experts urge citizens who have consumed this product not to panic. According to the assurances of the health authorities the consumption of horse meat does not pose a health hazard. The problem in this case is that consumers are misled with incorrect information about the content of the products.
The French company Spangero, which is based on the scandal with over 750 tons sold horse meat in 13 member states of the European Union, lost its sanitary permit on 14.02.2013. by order of the French health authorities. "The scandal with horse meat shows a very serious breakthrough in the system of internal trade in the European Union "is the opinion of Minister Naidenov.
