Ochibolets / Potentilla / is a perennial herbaceous plant, which is also known by the names buturak, duckweed, gooseberry, yellow window. It belongs to the Rosaceae family. The stem of the weevil reaches a height of 25 cm. The plant has a short and thick rhizome.

On the outside, its color is dark brown, and when broken it becomes reddish-brown or light red. The basal leaves of the weevil have a long stalk, and the stem leaves are sessile and without a stalk, with large leaf-shaped cut stipules, which have three leaflets. The small petals of the leaves are serrated at the top.

The flowers of the weevil are singly arranged on long stalks and have a diameter of about 1 cm. The calyx is composed of two circles of four leaflets. The fruit is a dry wrinkled nut that has numerous seeds.

Ochibolets blooms from June to August. It is found in wet places and meadows. It is distributed throughout the country up to 2800 meters above sea level.

In very ancient times, the rhizomes of the herb were used to dye silk and wool in red, black and brown, to tan leather.

According to legend eyeball is a grass that grows around a spring of living water. It is attributed legendary power, although it looks quite simple and two can be distinguished in the grass.

Composition of eyeball

The eyeball contains essential oil, resinous substance, starch, wax, ellagic and quinic acid, glycosides tormentilin and tormentol, up to 35% tannins, including catechins and catechin flobafen.

Collection and storage of eyeliner

The rhizomes of the plant are used for medicinal purposes, which is why they are mainly collected. The rhizomes of the weevil are removed in early spring / March / or in autumn / October / from 2-3-year-old plants.

After removal, the rhizomes are washed and dried in the shade. When drying, the rhizomes should not touch iron objects, because they darken.

Properly dried herb has a dark brown or reddish brown color on the outside and a red color on the inside. It has no smell, but has an astringent and bitter taste.

Benefits of eyeballs

The eyeball acts burning and hemostatic. It is used for hemorrhages of various nature - from stomach ulcers to heavy menstruation. Helps with diarrhea, white flow, diabetes.

Folk medicine with eyeball

In Bulgarian folk medicine ochibolets is also used for headaches, dysentery, malaria, blood in the urine, chest pain. Externally, the decoction of comfrey is recommended for inflammation of the oral cavity and to strengthen the gums.

Infusion of the whole herb in olive oil / ratio 1: 10 / is left to mature for 20 days and is used to lubricate cracked skin on the hands, lips and feet.

Ochibolets can be used as a decoction for both internal and external use. Pour 2 tbsp. chopped rhizome of the herb with 500 ml of boiling water.

Boil for about 10 minutes and leave to soak for an hour. The decoction is taken three times a day before meals in a glass. For external use, make a gargle of 30 g eyeball and 500 ml of water.
