Those who decide to become vegan just because it is fashionable, seriously endanger their health, warns a leading nutritionist.
Catherine Collins of the British Nutrition Association says more and more people are becoming vegans these days. They take this step not because of health needs or ethical considerations, but only because of the influence of pop culture, inspired by celebrities they admire.
This poses serious risks, the expert believes, because those who decide to undergo this essentially extreme diet do not think about the consequences of it and at least do not do it properly.
What we are witnessing today is a kind of food puritanism. There is the idea of a sublime diet, of adhering to an unadulterated and ideal diet. People see Gwyneth Paltrow on the Internet with her flawless appearance holding a bowl of pomegranates, and they want the same. This is the latest fashion, but in practice, those who decide to imitate the actress are seriously harming their health, says Collins.
People who become vegan because they really believe in this concept of eating know what to do and how to do it. They know how to stop meat and dairy products in a way that doesn't harm them. This is not the case with those who become vegan just because it is fashionable. You shouldn't be like that just because you're inspired by a photo on the Internet, Collins warned.
New research reveals that the number of Britons who have become vegans has increased by 350 percent in the last decade. The Vegan Society, the organization of people who have given up animal products, is estimated at at least 542,000 people in the United Kingdom, and the number is constantly growing.
A vegan diet is one that excludes all animal products, including meat, fish, milk, cheese, eggs and honey.
Many proponents of this diet claim that diet has a number of health benefits. However, some nutritionists say vegans are at serious risk of not getting enough protein and important vitamins and nutrients such as B12 and calcium.
