In 2007, Porvi Patodia, who is of Indian descent, became pregnant and realized she was eating too many chips. Her desire to eat salty snacks and chips is constant. Then I asked myself - what else can I eat while pregnant?. But what mothers should eat during pregnancy is a sensitive topic. Porvi remembers the roasted chickpeas her mother used to make.

Patodia begins to roast chickpeas. After giving birth, she went on with her life, but the thought of proper nutrition did not leave her and she realized that the people around her were missing something really important.

Five years later, Patodia, driven by her appetite during pregnancy, her Indian origins and her professional experience in the food industry, launched the Biena Snacks project, which offers more than a dozen varieties of crunchy and fragrant chickpeas. And the business is really starting because chickpeas are available in more than 12,000 stores.

Bienna is part of a constellation of American food companies, including Banza and The Good Bean, that have appeared around the modest chickpeas in recent years, ready to fully integrate chickpeas in the usual food of the people. There are now chips with chickpea flour and vegan oil emulsified with liquid humus residues. They offer dessert hummus, as well as many recipes for chickpeas to prepare at home.

Modern ingredients that are healthy can be easily rejected because people are not used to them. But the growing interest in chickpeas in the US it is so advanced that it is even reflected in the data on Internet demand - since 2011 there has been a steady increase in demand for recipes for hummus, which already occupies a common place on the table of lovers of smart and modern nutrition.

In the United States, a country that is becoming more cautious about meat, and more open than ever to non-Western ingredients, and also concerned about climate change, the growing role of chickpeas is inevitable rather than a new fad.
