It will be introduced by the end of 2018 color labeling of food we have. With it we will more easily recognize which are the useful, neutral and harmful foods on the market.
Color codes will show consumers the level of salt, sugars, fats and saturated fatty acids in a particular product. The codes are being introduced gradually in the EU. The new labels should be everywhere by the end of 2018.
Each color will say a lot about the product, which indicates:
- Red is a sign that it exceeds the recommended amount of salt, sugar or fat for the respective weight;
- Yellow says that the ceiling is approaching the permissible level;
- Green means that the food is healthy.
The new labeling system is a private initiative of the multinational companies Mondelis International Nestle, PepsiCo, Coca-Cola and Unilever. The idea aims to help Brussels in its intention to introduce harmonized labeling of food composition on packaging. The scheme is open to any organization that decides to implement it.
Color codes have the real potential to increase the number of people making healthy choices. The color accents in the presentation of the information make it more visible and thus facilitate the users in their choice, the companies explained.
