59 charred grains of cultivated rice, discovered by Korean archaeologists during excavations near the village of Sorori in the South Korean province of Chungbuk, are 15,000 years old.

This age challenges the hitherto widespread theory that rice as an agricultural crop appeared in China 12,000 years ago. The age of rice is determined by radioactive dating.

The DNA analysis shows that it is different from the one planted now and this allows scientists to study the evolution of one of the most popular crops.

Rice is the most common cereal on the planet. It is a major economic crop for over 3 billion people worldwide. It is also known for its many beneficial properties.

It contains B vitamins, which maintain the activity of the nervous system and the body's energy balance, vitamin E - an antioxidant that protects against the harmful effects of the environment and more.

Rice also contains phosphorus, which is responsible for cell reproduction, potassium, calcium, magnesium and others. Nutritionists emphasize the fact that the most useful of all types is dark rice - steamed and brown. So far, there are about 83 thousand types of rice.

Rice production provides 85 kg per year for each inhabitant of the planet. Its grains are high in calories - they include 75-85 percent carbohydrates and 10 percent protein. 96 percent of these two ingredients are absorbed by the human body.
