The vegetable producer from Sandanski Georgi Kaftanov commented to the media that a lot of discarded products are imported from neighboring Greece - mainly tomatoes.
The Bulgarian producer insists on strengthening the control over the import and passage of food through the territory of our country.
According to Kaftanov, at the moment the control is extremely weak, as small traders who import less than 3.5 tons of products with their cars have not been inspected.
Kaftanov says that more and more often low-quality tomatoes are found on the Bulgarian markets, which were most likely imported from neighboring Greece, where they were discarded.
Discarded products arrive in the domestic markets without any documents of their origin and thus it becomes impossible to trace where they come from.
Nikolay Rosnev from the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency explained that until recently the import of poor quality tomatoes was stopped, but with the arrival of spring it started again.
In order to end the practice of importing discarded tomatoes in small quantities, the Ministry of Finance and the National Revenue Agency must issue an order that will allow the inspection of smaller vehicles that import food into the country.
Until now, BFSA inspections focus only on large commodity exchanges, where in most cases they can prove the origin and quality of the products offered.
The Food Safety Directorate announced that during the inspections around Easter, 500 eggs without documents of origin were found in a warehouse in the Shumen region.
The inspection found that the eggs were from an unregulated source, and the owner of the warehouse was issued a certificate for BGN 1,000.
During the past week, two acts for raising chickens in an unregistered site in the Shumen village of Bliznatsi were drawn up.
The Food Safety Agency added that during the 24 inspections carried out in Sofia there was not a single violation found, unlike in Burgas, where 28 acts have been drawn up for expired or obscure goods.
