The speed of drinking beer is determined mainly by the shape of the glass, say researchers from Alcohol Research Group Bristol. For their study, the researchers used volunteers who underwent medical examinations to prove that they did not suffer from alcoholism.
There were 160 participants, and the task given to them was to drink 0.3 liters of beer in different types of glasses. For their part, the researchers found exactly how long it took participants to dry each glass of beer. Volunteers drank beer faster if poured into an irregularly shaped glass.
When the beer was in a simple mug, people drank beer at a slower pace, the results said. The scientists' explanation is that the curved cup in some unusual way creates an optical illusion and the volunteers cannot judge the amount in it.
Ordinary glasses were dried by the participants for 13 minutes, and the rounded mugs were empty after an average of eight minutes, experts explain.
The study was also done with soft drinks, but scientists found that the type of glasses has nothing to do with the tested amount of soft drinks. Of course, the speed at which people drink also determines how quickly they will get drunk - the number of drinks tested is also important, the researchers added.
There were also psychologists in the study, whose assessment was that the curved glass does not allow people to judge exactly where its environment is and therefore get drunk at a faster pace.
The study is very useful because slowing down the pace of drinking alcohol will have an effect not only on the individual but also on society, scientists say. The entire study is published in The Huffington Post reported.
