Poisonous cheese with a dangerous toxin in it was stopped from being sold on the market. Eating disorders became apparent during routine milk testing for aflatoxin. Excessive amounts of it were found in a farm in the village of Radyuvene, Lovech municipality.
Following the identification of potentially dangerous food for consumers, it became clear that the milk was being delivered to a dairy. There, inspectors at the Regional Directorate for Food Safety in the town of Lovech banned the entire amount of cheese produced from raw materials on the same farm.
Samples were sampled and elevated levels of aflatoxin were found, and eventually all available cheese was destroyed in a slaughterhouse. According to the Food Safety Agency, there are currently no quantities of contaminated cheese on the market.
The product itself was still in a period of "ripening" and goods sold from it were not allowed in stores and retail chains. The toxic cheese did not leave the plant.
As of today, October 18, an organization has been formed for all quantities of dairy products produced for home use in the area of the village of Radyuvene to be handed over to the competent authority, after which they will be destroyed.
The cause of the aflatoxin present in the milk in the area is the residual amounts of maize harvest in the lands where the animals have been grazed. Aflatoxins are usually found in food and feed due to fungal contamination by molds - Aspergillus flavus and A. parasiticus, growing in warm and humid conditions.
