Wondering what to cook for dinner again? As you walk to the supermarket, you will now be able to consult the mobile application FoodLoop and find the best deals located closest to you, writes EU Reporter Correspondent.

This system has become accessible thanks to EU funding. It notifies you when a product is discounted, as it will expire soon. This way you will always shop at affordable prices and prevent food waste.

Food chains often throw away expired foodstuffs, which means that 90 million tonnes of food end up in the rubbish every year. However, modern technology allows these foods to be marked with special barcodes and FoodLoop users to take advantage of the reduction in real time.

The new application will soon be tested in two organic supermarkets and a bakery in Germany. FoodLoop will allow people to search for a particular product and get the best deals on it. With this technology you will even be able to be informed by phone.

You can make your list of the products you generally buy and indicate whether you want to receive information about other offers near you. In case of a reduced product, you will receive a notification immediately. The discounts are different each time and depend on the days remaining until the product's deadline, say the creators of the application.

FoodLoop's "fathers" use tools provided by FI-WARE-open, cloud-based infrastructure to build a variety of applications and services.

I am glad that FoodLoop is based on the building blocks provided by FI-WARE. The EU is investing in a range of tools that can help other great ideas. I expect even more original applications and services to be invented in the coming months: in September, € 80 million of the EU will be available to around 1,300 small businesses and web entrepreneurs using FI-WARE tools. Get ready and be creative, said EC Vice President Nelly Cruz, in charge of digital technologies.
