The salt pans on tables in restaurants in Bolivia may soon be banned. The reason is not another action related to the world-famous organic food.
It is about people's health, and the proposal comes from the Deputy Minister of Consumer Rights in the country - Guillermo Mendoza. The reason for the unusual measure is the fact that in Bolivia more than a third of the population suffers from high blood pressure.
The easiest option to help these people is to limit the use of salt, said Mendoza, who announced his proposal during his inauguration.
His wish is for all restaurants to announce in their menus exactly how much salt is in each of the dishes they offer in the particular restaurant.
The Deputy Minister's proposals are actually several - he suggests that sugar be described in the same way in the menu. According to him, it is important to write which dish contains cholesterol and exactly how much. Proponents of the minister's idea believe that people should know what is served to them and what they will eat.
Bolivians consumed about 7 grams of salt a day, according to the latest report from a private Latin American heart foundation. This weight is more than what is considered normal intake - 5 g of salt per day.
It also turns out that every third person in Bolivia suffers from hypertension, and the main reason for this health problem is the use of salt.
The Bolivian Society of Cardiology does not fail to remind that high blood pressure is one of the main causes of cardiovascular disease. Similar measures related to salt restriction have been taken in other countries - Mexico, Uruguay and others.
However, abrupt cessation of salt can have a detrimental effect on the human body, according to past research. Neither the complete lack of salt nor the ingestion of too much spice is a good idea.
The right answer, according to experts, is in balance and eating in moderation - this, they add, applies not only to salt and spices, but to all other foods.
