Bacon in stores will also be subject to the public health tax known as tax on harmful foods. The new bacon rate will make it more expensive, as will other foods that are considered unhealthy.

This was announced by the Deputy Minister of Health Dr. Adam Persenski in the studio of Hello, Bulgaria on Nova TV. A public health tax is among the most important projects for the Ministry of Health.

The main goal of its introduction is to introduce a clear distinction between foods that are good for our health and those that have been proven to harm it. Experts are unanimous that only with higher prices of harmful foods will their mass purchase by consumers fall.

Dr. Persenski added that the rate of harmful food will not include bread, dairy and meat products, which are the main food products and are most often bought by customers.

The tax could bring in up to 150m extra money for the state treasury, and the health and sports ministers believe that within 4-5 years the first positive results from the reduced consumption of harmful foods will be seen.

The same tax was adopted in Hungary in 2011 and the country already reports 27% less consumption of harmful foods.

Health experts in the person of Professor Milan Milanov are also of the opinion that with the introduction of the tax Bulgarians will improve their health.

Studies are adamant that in our country the consumption of sugar and salt, which are the main causes of obesity, diabetes and heart disease, is overdone.

With the higher price of unhealthy foods, even the producers themselves can change the ingredients in the goods so that they become more useful and sold more.
