The lamb that thousands of Bulgarians will put on their table for Easter, as tradition dictates, will most likely be New Zealand, meat producers warn.

For about a month now, frozen lamb from New Zealand has been imported in Bulgaria.

It is no secret that in the weeks before Easter and St. George's Day, local traders flood the market with frozen imported lamb, which is practically part of the military reserves of various countries.

Last year, frozen lamb was imported en masse from Chile, while this year it is imported from New Zealand. The purpose of the importers is to place the imported meat on the market around Easter.

According to Biser Chilingirov, who is chairman of the National Sheep Breeding Association, imported frozen meat should be offered in the trade network for no more than BGN 9 / kg.

But traders generally prefer to let it relax and sell it to their customers as fresh meat at prices from 11 to 16 BGN / kg.

No increase in lamb prices is expected this year, Chilingirov reassured Bulgarians. A kilo of live meat will be traded for 5-6 leva from the farms.

However, most of the meat imported from New Zealand will not be available in stores, but will be sold directly in restaurants, as well as in the meat processing industry, where it will be used to make sausages and more.

Experts from the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency warn that frozen meat can only be offered as such, and its attempts to try it on customers as a fresh crumb are subject to sanctions.

The sanction is imposed because after thawing the expiration date is no longer valid. The shelf life of all goods is valid only when they are stored at the correct temperature.

Imported meat in our country undergoes several inspections depending on whether it arrives in our country directly from New Zealand or is imported through a third member state of the European Union.

The BFSA announced that both every year and this year they will intensify inspections of shops and warehouses just before the Easter holidays and St. George's Day.
