Today is the first Assumption of the Year, which is celebrated exactly 8 weeks before Easter.

At the Great Assumption, the Christians distribute boiled wheat, home-made ritual bread and wine for their deceased loved ones.

On the Saturday before the Feast of Tabernacles, Christians must visit the graves of the dead and give each other boiled wheat, also known as kolyvo.

In modern times it is customary to give small sweets and pickles in memory.

Food is distributed among the living to remember the dead. Food should also be left to the poor, but in no case to the graves, because according to the Orthodox canon a person's soul does not need material things.

Great Assumption, as well as all other Ascetics in the Orthodox calendar, are always celebrated on Saturday, because on this day Jesus Christ was dead.

There must be 3 products at each table - bread, which is a symbol of Christ's body, red wine - a symbol of Christ's blood, and wheat, which symbolizes the Resurrection.

According to the Holy Apostle Paul, the grain of wheat is one of the few products in nature that must first be buried in the ground to grow, thus symbolizing death and resurrection.

Boiled wheat for the table of the Great Assumption is also called kolivo and it must be sweetened. The wheat is boiled in a deep pot, and the water in it should be about 2-3 fingers above the amount of wheat.

Add a pinch of salt and leave on a low heat to boil. Usually 1 hour is enough to fully cook the wheat.

The grains should swell and soften, and the water should be constantly monitored during cooking, because if it boils, the wheat will burn.

Once ready, the wheat is mixed with 200 grams of granulated sugar, crushed walnuts and 100 grams of breadcrumbs.

Sprinkle powdered sugar and cinnamon on top of the cradle before distributing it in distribution bowls.
