The Ministry of Agriculture and Food has decided that Bulgaria should join the European Union countries that ban the cultivation of GMO corn on their territory.
Our line ministry has sent 10 notification letters to the European Commission, in which it states the refusal of our country to cultivate GMO products.
This will protect the corn produced in our country by a completely natural method. Several organizations doubted that GMO culture would harm biodiversity in native agriculture.
According to the directive of the European Commission, by October 3, 2015, each member state of the European Union had to indicate whether it wanted to grow the new GMO corn or not.
Before us, 9 EU countries turned out to grow GMO corn - Austria, Italy, France, Germany, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Lithuania, Greece, Latvia, Hungary, Luxembourg and Wales.
Apart from the last variety of corn, selected in the USA, with its decision our country forbids to grow other GMO crops on our territory - corn Bt11xMIR604xGA21, corn MIR604, corn GA 21, corn Bt11, corn 1507 x 59122, corn 59122, corn MON 810 corn, 40-3-2 soybeans and Moonshadow 1 cloves.
The decision to grow these crops was taken by the European Parliament in 2014. However, each country was given the right to choose whether to cultivate the different varieties.
Such was the procedure for TC1507 corn, when our country again refused to grow.
In Bulgaria, any consideration of GMO products is categorically rejected by citizens, environmental, agricultural, beekeeping and other organizations. Not only the native deputies, but also the citizens do not want genetically modified crops in our country.
Survey data 5 years ago showed that 97% of Bulgarians do not want these foods on the market.
