This year the beekeepers in our country report the weakest honey yield in 20 years alone. Experts believe that bad weather conditions are the main culprit for the poorer harvest in 2014.

The news was announced by the Deputy Chairman of the National Association of Professional Beekeepers Ivan Kozhuharov to Darik Radio.

According to Kozhuharov, less than the usual average quantities of honey for the country have been produced this year. Under normal weather conditions, between 40 and 60 kilograms of honey were extracted from one beehive in Bulgaria.

This year the average yield for the country was about 35 kilograms per beehive, and in some parts of Bulgaria even zero honey yield was reported.

In the better years, beekeepers from Dobrogea produced up to 140 kilograms of honey from one hive.

This year the weather was cooler, there were no typical June and July hot nights and under these conditions the bees do not get enough honey - said Ivan Kozhuharov, who is currently in Dobrich because of the traditional honey festival in the city.

This year the festival will be held between November 17 and 27, and the organizer of the event is the regional coordinator of the Union of Bulgarian Beekeepers Yanko Yankov.

Before the start of the festival, experts added that honey is rising in price. Last year the purchase price was BGN 4 per kilogram, and this year it jumped to BGN 5.20.

This means that the retail weight of a kilogram of polyfloral honey exceeds BGN 10. A kilogram of monofloral honey costs between BGN 12 and 15, and manna honey sells for BGN 15 per kilogram.

This year's festival in Dobrich will feature honey producers from both the host city and Varna and Razgrad.

Ivan Kozhuharov notes that in recent years honey festivals in our country have become very popular and are visited more and more by Bulgarians. In such events, beekeepers manage to sell between 7 and 8 tons of honey directly to customers in one year.

The honey festival in Dobrich will take place on Nezavisimost Street between the former Rodina cinema and the Dobrudja restaurant.
