This year, Bulgarian beekeepers expect lower honey yields by between 30 and 50 percent. The organization added that this year the wholesale purchase price of the bee product will be BGN 4 per kilogram.
The honey yield is almost twice as low as a result of hail and torrential rains in the country this year, the industry announced during the 50th National Beekeeping Meeting North-South, which took place this year in the Beklemeto area.
This year the purchase price of the product will be BGN 4 per kilogram wholesale, but according to the beekeepers it is not enough to fully cover their expenses this year.
It is expected that between 6,000 and 12,000 tons of honey will be extracted in the country this year.
The chairman of the Bulgarian Union of Beekeepers Mihail Mihailov said that currently the most important thing for beekeepers is the unification of about 10 national beekeeping organizations.
We want to unite in an organization that really protects our interests, because the common agricultural policy until 2020 for a period of seven years beekeeping will not be supported by this program - said Mihailov.
It is intended that the common beekeeping organization be formed by October 15 this year at the latest.
At the 50th anniversary meeting, Mihailov announced that a honey festival would be held in Sofia between September 15th and 22nd. Every year the Autumn Honey Festival in the capital brings together about 40 of the best producers in the industry.
The idea for organizing a honey festival is to promote honey and bee products as food and medicine, as well as the opportunity within specialized exhibitions for more people to be able to buy natural bee products directly from producers.
Every year during the festival in Sofia is held a competition called Queen of Honey. Last year the prize went to Darina Ilcheva from the town of Yambol, who is an active beekeeper with more than 100 bee families.
This year, prizes for the most prosperous beekeeper and the best stand of the festival will be awarded.
