About 72 tons of edible food was discarded by Americans within a year. Unused food is worth $ 165 billion, according to a study by Harvard University.

According to the Council for the Protection of Natural Resources in the United States, such an unprecedented dumping of food products in the country occurred due to improper labeling of goods.

Experts say that the labeling of most products was misunderstood, and as a result, 80% of Americans were mistaken in reading labels and wasted a year on food consumption.

However, global food and beverage companies hope to halve food waste by 2015. It is envisaged to introduce social regulations so that food can be used more efficiently.

A year ago, the Consumer Goods Forum (CGF) took place in New York, with a network of about 400 traders, manufacturers and other market participants from a total of 70 countries with combined sales of 2.5 trillion euros.

In 2016, they outlined common mechanisms for monitoring food consumption, and their reports will be made public later this year.

The system aims to reduce food loss in the production process, as well as to reduce the amount of food waste left in warehouses.

It is tragic that about 2 million tons of food produced in different parts of the world is lost or discarded without reaching anyone's plate at all, said Paul Polman, CEO of Unilever, quoted by Reuters.
