Consuming more milk will not help us and reduce the risk of bone fractures, according to a study cited by the BBC. A Swedish study found that women who consumed more than three glasses of milk a day were at greater risk of breaking bones than women who consumed less.

Experts emphasize that these results should not be taken as evidence that frequent drinking of fresh milk leads to fractures. They remind that factors for such a condition are weight, alcohol consumption and others.

Swedish scientists have conducted a study with the help of more than 61 thousand women.

Specialists have studied the eating habits of women in the period 1987-90. In 1997 scientists have observed the eating habits of more than 45,000 men. The specialists then monitored the health of the participants in both groups.

Both men and women who underwent the survey were asked to complete a questionnaire and say how often they consumed dairy products during the year. After receiving these results, the specialists tracked how many of the participants had fractures and how many died in the next few years.

Women have been studied for a period of 20 years, and the results show that those who consumed more than 680 ml. fresh milk per day are at greater risk of fractures, in contrast to women who drink less.

Professor Carl Mikaelson, who works at Uppsala University, is also the head of the study. According to Mikaelson, women who consumed more than three glasses of milk a day were twice as likely to die at the end of the study as women who did not.

It also turns out that women who drank large amounts of milk were at greater risk of fractures of the femur - they are 50 percent more at risk than those who do not drink milk often.

The gentlemen who were studied had an average of eleven years after the first study, but the trend was not as clear, the professor said. The opposite trend was observed in the consumption of yogurt - those who eat more of it have a lower risk of fractures.

The probable reason for the results of the study is the sugars found in milk and which have been shown to accelerate the aging process.
