Today we celebrate Meatball Day. The earliest data on today's favorite meatballs are found in notes from ancient Rome. Over the centuries, they have become a staple food in the family kitchen of Italy. The first official recipe for their preparation appeared in a cookbook in America in 1889.
The meatballs have many variations, similar to other ancient foods. They vary according to the country in which they are prepared. It has been found that over 75% of people who like to eat meat would prefer meatballs to steak.
There are over 20,000 variations of meatballs in the world. This number includes potato, spinach and whole vegetable meatballs. As a rule, however, it is assumed that the meatball must be made of meat. It can be beef, pork, chicken and turkey. Mandatory ingredients in local meatballs are breadcrumbs and eggs, which homogenize the mixture. According to the master chefs, the secret of the delicious meatball is the old bread soaked in milk and added to the minced meat.
Meatballs can be added to a variety of dishes in addition to on their own. Some even put them in the soup. In Spain, for example, you can eat delicious meatballs in vegetable broth, generously seasoned with hot peppers and cumin. In Asia, they are served with yogurt sauce and pomegranate, in which they are dipped before you bite off them.
In different countries, minced meat for meatballs is forged in different ways. Italian master chefs are adamant that the secret of delicious meatballs is in parmesan and prosciutto, which they generously add to the minced meat.
In Sweden, they are seasoned with onions, allspice and a pinch of cloves. There, the meatballs are made from a traditional mixture of beef and pork and served in a brown or white cream sauce. Sprinkle with fresh dill on top.
The most exotic are perhaps the meatballs from the Middle East, which are seasoned with coriander, nutmeg, cumin and cinnamon.
