Cow butter in Bulgaria is twice as expensivethan the average prices in the European Union, according to a study by the Institute of Agricultural Economics (SARA). According to experts, drastic differences in oil prices are due to the fact that Bulgaria relies mainly on imports, which have risen in price due to difficulties in supply in the context of the coronavirus pandemic.

The average price per kilogram in Bulgaria in March is traded for a little over BGN 14. For the same period in other EU Member States the kilo of butter was sold for BGN 6.83.

Wholesale in Bulgaria 100 kg of oil are traded for BGN 1,413, and in Europe - for about BGN 682.6.

In retail cuts, the differences in prices are not so striking, shows the analysis of SARA. In supermarkets in Germany, 250 g of butter are sold for an average of 1.4 euros (2.8 levs), and in Bulgaria - between 4 and 5 levs.

April began with lower prices of dairy products European exchanges - 2,930 euros per tonne, which is about 300 euros less than the same month last year. Prices are expected to fall further in May and June, to 2,870 euros per tonne. According to experts, these are the lowest product prices for almost five years (since June 2016).

Reason for the drop in the price of butter is the reduced price of milk powder due to the coronavirus.

Bozhidar Ivanov from the Center for Agricultural Research told Nova TV that domestic production of cow butter is extremely limited. For this reason, it is necessary to import this product to Bulgaria. According to him the production of cow butter in our country can meet only 30-40% of market needs.

However, the consumption of cow butter in our country is not high - between 80 and 90 tons per month. The branch organizations believe that the domestic production can easily satisfy this consumption.

The Milkmen's Association still claims that half of the oil on the Bulgarian market is made in our country. From there, however, they note that a large part of the butter produced in Bulgaria is sold in the production of sweets and bread.

Experts report that reason for the rise in price of oil and other dairy products are logistical problems caused by the coronavirus.

Another reason is the increased demand for dairy products. Depending on the import of raw materials and talking products is expected rise in price of yellow cheese.
