We are used to thinking about vitamin D. as for one of the many vitamins our body needs. The so-called sun vitamin is something more. It is a steroid hormone and affects almost two thousand genes in the body.
One of these important genes is the ability to fight infections and chronic inflammation. It is a precaution against diseases such as cancer, type 1 and 2 diabetes, multiple sclerosis and others. It also takes care of the health of bones and teeth.
Vitamin D deficiency affects the body badly. Its absence is a catalyst for some of the most severe chronic diseases. Therefore, getting the right amount of vitamin D is an important issue in health care.
We get it through sunbathing or with food. It is known that bird eggs are a natural source of vitamin D and can partially compensate for its lack. Regular consumption of eggs is recommended for any healthy body.
German nutritionists have made a curious discovery. They were convinced that the content of vitamin D in hen eggs can be artificially enlarged by exposing the laying hens to intense ultraviolet light.
The solarium for chickens is a fun idea, but scientists have taken it very seriously. The idea was to help people increase their vitamin intake by consuming eggs obtained in this unusual way.
Seeing that through intense ultraviolet light can increase the production of vitamin D in hen eggs, became an incentive to conduct an experiment.
The experiment proved successful. After less than a month, the hens, which are exposed to ultraviolet light for six hours a day, began to lay eggs with three to four times the sun's vitamin content.
The birds obviously liked the idea of having a solarium in the henhouse, because they did not avoid the places with the placed lamps, nor did they show other unusual symptoms of intolerance. This means that ultraviolet light does not cause problems in birds.
It turns out that the method works in practice, and this can be an easy and tasty way to vitamin D supply in humans.
