The illegal import of plant protection products in our country has doubled, announced Dr. Petar Nikolov, chairman of the Bulgarian Plant Protection Association, to Trud.

These products are carcinogenic and dangerous for fruits and vegetables, as well as for bees.

According to Dr. Nikolov, the largest quantities of these preparations come from Turkey, but there are also illegal imports from Serbia and Macedonia.

For some of the products imported from Turkey, the expert commented that they were used for warfare and most of them for banned for use in the European Union.

These herbal preparations are most often stored in areas around the border. They are distributed through an illegal distribution network to Bulgarian traders and tenants.

Bulgarian farmers buy them because their price is twice lower than the preparations approved for use in their agricultural products.

Representatives of the industry have adopted a declaration against the illegal import of plant protection products in our country and openly insist that this activity be criminalized and prosecuted by law.

Last year, BFSA inspectors seized more than 6 tonnes of illegal plant protection products, which they say increase pesticide levels in fruits and vegetables and make them dangerous to communicate.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Food announces that only the Food Agency can control the import and export of these substances. For this reason, regular border checks are carried out.

Spraying with these preparations can be very dangerous to health because they have not passed the mandatory inspections under European legislation, and many farmers are raising the permissible values, increasing the risk of consuming the product.
