Traditional Bulgarian potato varieties are no longer planted in the Rhodopes as they were years ago, local farmers say. The potatoes grown in this area are mainly of Dutch varieties.

Bulgarian farmers admit that the Bulgarian potato variety has disappeared, which is why they are forced to plant imports from abroad.

Agria, Impala, Agata, Vault, Riviera, Artemis are the most famous Dutch varieties that are planted in the Rhodopes. About 200 tons of the French variety Luciana were planted in the village of Momchilovtsi.

Years ago, when it was a state-owned seed farm, we produced our variety. We also bred Dutch varieties, of course. Now the Bulgarian variety does not exist. Nobody supports it, nobody grows it, everything is imported because it is very expensive. First there must be a branch selection to be done, years ago everything was subsidized by the state. The other reason is that there are no big producers,”the farmer Iliya Kanev told Nova TV.

About 30 years ago, the main activity in the village of Momchilovtsi was growing potatoes. The village has produced about 2500 tons for 1 year. Today, people plant mainly for their own needs, and about 600 tons are sold annually for wholesale.

Due to the fact that the potatoes in Momchilovtsi are processed by hand, their price values are higher than those of imported products from abroad. Higher retail prices make the Rhodope potatoes undesirable by domestic consumers.

Although of lower quality, Bulgarians prefer to buy imported potatoes because of their low prices.

In a good year and respectively harvest, a kilo of potatoes is sold for 55 stotinki. The Rhodope potatoes on the mass market reach 80 stotinki per kilogram at retail.

According to farmers, the only way to prevent the complete disappearance of Bulgarian potato production is for state institutions to subsidize the sector.

If the Bulgarian production of potatoes in the Rhodopes is stimulated, the end consumer in our country will buy both cheaper and Bulgarian potatoes.
