Bulgarian producers have started to uproot their apple orchards en masse and focus on growing other crops because they fail to sell their goods.

The reason for this is the strong import of Polish apples, which are offered at lower prices than the Bulgarian ones, Bulgarian National Television reports.

At wholesale prices of 35 stotinki per kilogram, our farmers fail to sell their products and are forced to throw them away. Owners of orchards around Plovdiv are alarmed about this.

After the Russian embargo on goods from the European Union, the Bulgarian market was flooded with Polish tomatoes and apples, which are preferred by both large food chains and smaller stores.

If this trend continues, you will not find Bulgarian apples on the market for up to 10 years, says the producer Krassimir Kunchev.

He says that in Poland they can afford such low prices, because they receive subsidies of BGN 1.20 per kilogram, while Bulgarians are neglected in this regard.

The subsidy for Bulgarian producers is BGN 100 per decare, which, if divided into three tons of production, is equal to 3 stotinki per kilogram. The Polish apple producer earns as much in one year as the Bulgarian farmers in 40.

This situation has forced a large number of local farmers to switch to another type of production or to export their goods to neighboring Romania.

The industry is adamant that if a level playing field in Europe is not ensured, Bulgarian production is doomed.
