Nearly 4 tons of food, mainly of animal origin, were seized by the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency during inspections around Christmas and New Year.

No serious violations have been registered around the biggest holidays in our country, the Agency also announced. Inspectors carried out inspections on each holiday to ensure the safety of consumers.

More than 2,800 inspections have been made across the country at retail outlets, food chains and wholesale warehouses.

The main violations registered during the holidays are the sale of expired food and the sale of food of unknown origin.

As a result of the established violations, 48 prescriptions were issued, 44 acts for administrative violation were drawn up, and one site was stopped from operation.

The most numerous violations have been registered in food of animal origin. These include the lack of accompanying documents proving the origin and quality of the product, non-compliance with storage conditions, expired food and incorrect keeping of documents guaranteeing the safety of the products.

Along with the inspections of the BFSA, food inspections were carried out by the National Revenue Agency and the Ministry of Interior. The control bodies carried out a total of 402 inspections, of which they issued 11 prescriptions and 22 acts for administrative violations.

More than 16 tons of food of animal origin have been stopped and sent for destruction.
