Today, the whole of Europe celebrates Obesity Day. European Obesity Day was first celebrated in 2009.

Five years ago, at the initiative of the National Forum for Combating Obesity in the UK and the Belgian Association of Obesity Patients, a day was set up to draw public attention to this serious problem, which many Europeans suffer from.

The goal is for people to lose weight to healthy levels, thus reducing the risk to their health and leading a better lifestyle.

Studies show that Europeans consume too much food but do not exercise enough. Alarming data also shows that more and more children on the Old Continent are overweight.

Research has shown that the number of obese people in Europe has tripled in the last two decades. Half of the adult population and 20% of children in the countries of the European region are overweight.

Bulgaria is also not spared from mass European obesity. According to the National Center for Public Health and Analysis for 2011, more than 200,000 of the country's children are overweight and 67,000 of them are obese.

Obesity is a global problem that is not the only concern in Europe. Obesity significantly increases the risk of high blood pressure and stroke, ischemic heart disease, type 2 diabetes, fat metabolism disorders, gallstone disease, hormonal disorders, joint disease and the occurrence of some cancers.

In addition, obesity creates a number of psychosocial problems that have serious consequences.

Experts recommend maintaining a healthy weight that is controlled through regular consumption of healthy foods and physical activity.

To be healthy, you should avoid consuming soft drinks and products high in salt and sugar. In addition, you should exercise for at least 75 minutes a day.
