The President of the Association of Organic Beekeeping - Petko Simeonov, announced that Bulgaria is ranked third in the production of honey in Europe.
The President of the Association added that Bulgarian honey is extremely valuable abroad because of its health qualities.
Simeonov called on consumers to buy honey directly from farmers to help small producers.
"When applying the techniques for plant activities, growers use preparations that are not tolerant to bees, which cause great losses in the bee families themselves and sometimes lead to 100% loss. The thefts of bee families have become more frequent, and Bulgarian honey is bought at an extremely low price, "the chairman told the media.
The official data were presented on Sunday in front of the Monument to the Soviet Army in Sofia during the honey days, which will last until June 29.
In front of the monument in the capital, children and their parents could try different honey products, and the kids were provided with information about the importance of bees in the environment.
The project Days of Honey is organized and funded by the program Technical Assistance for Beekeepers with the support of the Association for Organic Beekeeping.
The message of this year's campaign is A spoonful of honey a day and the power is with me.
From June 22 to 29 in Sofia, Varna, Plovdiv, Burgas, Veliko Tarnovo and Elena will be located stands for honey tasting, and the organizers will offer various games for young lovers of bee products.
This summer, the Honey Days include an interactive program that is aimed at a wide audience - anyone who wants to learn more about honey and wants to try it can do so for free.
Vidin honey producer Petar Mladenov reports that this year honey production in the area around Vidin may be quite low due to the rains in recent months.
"Forecasts for honey yields are rather unfavorable in terms of production," said the producer.
