Minimum food quality thresholds are expected to be introduced soon. The Minister of Agriculture Miroslav Naydenov and representatives of large retail chains have agreed on this.
This means that the state agency will impose certain requirements that even the cheapest food products in stores must meet. The aim of the initiative is to control the safety of food purchased by consumers, as well as to prevent possible serious accidents with food poisoning.
As a result of the innovation, despite many dissatisfaction on the part of a large part of the Bulgarian producers, so far there is no official information about mass withdrawal of products from the retail outlets.
Naidenov, however, reassured that "what is offered in retail chains, certainly by law and according to the guarantees they give, is safe." Rather, the meeting aimed to discuss whether this level of safety can be upgraded with a certain level of quality.
However, the Minister did not commit to deadlines for the introduction of minimum thresholds, nor did he explain on what principle it will be determined whether a product is of good quality or not and how this will affect the final price.
At the moment, the Bulgarian state standard / BDS / defines the upper limit for quality of dairy products and meat products / "Stara Planina" /, but the lower limit for quality is not defined, the managers of the retail chains explain.
However, the representatives of the hypermarkets did not answer the question whether there are cartel agreements between them for food prices.
