The cherries on the capital's Sitnyakovo market broke the known price records after the first production of the year came out with a price of BGN 25.90 per kilogram.
An inspection by the Monitor newspaper shows that traders have raised cherry prices en masse this year, taking advantage of a lower harvest.
At the Sitnyakovo market in Sofia, the cheapest cherries are offered for BGN 8 per kilogram, and in most of the markets in Sofia they can be found at prices between BGN 4-5. Cheaper are the Greek cherries, which sell for about 3 levs per kilogram.
There are many traders who, in addition to raising the prices per kilogram of cherries by about BGN 10, mislead customers that they are Bulgarian-made.
Despite the inscriptions that the fruits come from Asenovgrad, Plovdiv and Krichim, these cherries are from Greece.
Some sellers also entice customers by listing the prices per pound of cherries instead of a pound.
Thus, for half a kilo of Greek cherries we will have to give BGN 1.50, and for parsley - BGN 2.00. Cherries from Sandanski are traded at BGN 3 per kilogram.
Resellers at the Druzhba vegetable exchange in Sofia say that the cherries in the halls are mainly from our southern neighbor. Prices are not expected to fall, but even if they do, it will be symbolic, traders are adamant.
The reason for the higher prices of cherries this year is the ruined Kyustendil harvest. About 80% of the cherry trees in the Kyustendil region will not bear quality fruit due to the spring rains, Dimitar Sotirov from the Institute of Agriculture in Kyustendil told BTA.
There will be no export of cherries this year, and in order to fill the Bulgarian market with fruit, imports will increase.
