There will be Bulgarian cherries on our markets this year, but their prices will not be low at all. Their purchase price on the market in Sitnyakovo in Sofia is between BGN 50 and 60 per kilogram.
Producers in the Kyustendil region justify the high prices with the cold in April, which ruined a large part of the harvest. For the second year in a row, it happens that the temperatures are low during the flowering of the fruit trees, as if it were winter.
The surprising snow last month left most of the domestic cherry growers without any harvest, and many of them do not have insurance to cover the losses.
In most cases, they do not want to insure us before April 27 and this creates big problems for us, comment the producers in our country.
Cherry growers claim that although there were severe frosts last year, their losses were lower than this year.
Last year, the trees survived in the high fields, and now they have frozen there as well, says Nikolay Hristov, a cherry breeder at the Institute of Agriculture in Kyustendil.
The January frosts have already caused great damage, and temperatures of about 6 degrees in recent weeks have further damaged the production.
The hopes are that there will be a more abundant harvest from other parts of the country, which could reduce the price of cherries in the coming months. However, it is still too early to predict exactly how many will be recruited.
Only at the end of May will it be clear exactly how much they will cost us Bulgarian cherries, but it is known that for a kilogram of Kyustendil cherries we will have to spend a serious amount.
