We all know how important fruits and vegetables are in a healthy diet. Recently, however, a group of scientists has been able to prove the psychological benefits of their balanced consumption. They found that these natural products can deal with depression in just two weeks.
Researchers at the University of Otago studied 171 adults between the ages of 18 and 25 to find out what their eating habits were and to determine how they were involved in their health and mental development.
The volunteers were then divided into three groups so that the scientists could understand how the different diets would affect them. Specifically, one of the groups had to follow a diet high in fruits and vegetables.
For two weeks, the volunteers were encouraged with text messages and vouchers to eat more fruits and vegetables. They had to take an average of three extra servings of this type of healthy food (carrots, kiwis, apples and oranges).
At the end of the experiment, all participants underwent repeated tests to determine what was the change in their mental and physical condition. They were all subjected to healthy diets, which affected them in a positive way. People who ate more fruit showed a significant improvement in their psychological well-being.
They were more cheerful and motivated. Natural products were consumed both raw and heat-treated. Nevertheless, the overall psychological profile of the participants changed in a positive direction.
I believe that with an enhanced diet that includes mostly fruits and vegetables, mental conditions such as depression can be easily overcome in just two weeks, says study author Dr. Tamlin Connor.
According to him, the portions with these products should be reconsidered and increased and their intake should be increased in day care centers, schools, hospitals and institutions.
