It is not always necessary to dispose of expired food immediately. It is very important to read and understand the label and store food properly.
When we open the refrigerator, we often realize that the expiration date of the packaged food has expired and we wonder if we can consume it like that or throw it away?
In fact, as all experts confirm, the expiry date indicated on the packaging of the products is only a characteristic of the product.
At the end of the shelf life of some foods, certain flavors may be lost, but it is not always necessary to discard the food immediately. Obviously, a lot depends on the type of food and the way it is stored, so in most cases you need to read the label carefully and pay attention when you open the product to check it.
As already mentioned, the first thing you need to look for is the expiration date on the package. If only the expiration date is reported, it is better not to eat the product after that date, and if it is written "to be consumed preferably within", it is very likely that the food is completely good to eat.
Obviously, it should be preferred to eat specific products (dry) that show no signs of degradation and that are well preserved, while so-called "fresh foods" should be avoided (if they have expired).
In the following lines you can see which are the 10 foods that can be safely consumed after the expiration date.
1 - Packaged potato chips. Although not very healthy, the storage date is significantly extended due to the abundance of salt.
2 - Chocolate. For this sweet food, the amount of sugar guarantees its preservation.
3 - Ketchup. This is one of the products where, if stored properly, it can be consumed even one year after the expiration date, if stored in a cool and dry place.
4 - Yogurt. In general, it can be used up to six weeks after the expiration date, just be aware of the presence of mold when you open it.
5 - Hard or seasoned cheese. This is one of those products that never expires. On the other hand, soft cheeses should be strictly avoided (if they have expired).
6 - Milk. With milk you have to be very careful, just look: if it starts to smell bad and thickens, it can not be consumed.
7 - Eggs. Be very careful. To find out if they are suitable, you just need to immerse them in a bowl of water: if they are swimming, there is probably gas and bacteria inside them, then it is better to throw them away. On the contrary, if they sink, they are probably still good.
8 - Bread. You can safely consume it, even if it is old, as long as it has not developed any mold.
9 - Rice. Like pasta, its consumption can continue for months after the expiration date.
10 - Fruits and vegetables. You just have to look at them: if there is no mold, excessive drying or discoloration, then they can be safely eaten.
