The last two weeks have seen a sharp rise in dairy prices. The first signals are a sharp jump in the sales prices of our cheese and yellow cheese came from Plovdiv. According to Plovdiv residents, the prices of ordinary cow's cheese, which until mid-September was traded at BGN 5.5 / kg, are now offered at BGN 7 / kg. Prices per kilogram of yellow cheese start from BGN 12 / kg and up.

According to Boryana Doncheva, who is a member of the board of the Association of Dairy Producers, there are indeed upward adjustments in the prices of all dairy products.

The reason for the increase in prices is the reduction in the amount of milk. According to Docheva, the reduced milk production is a direct result of climate change in Bulgaria in recent years.

Prolonged periods of drought adversely affect the feed and grazing of animals, as a result, reduces milk yield and milk quality.

Milk shortages are already being felt by some of the smaller producers in the industry. This also affects the purchase price of milk, which is currently around 0.80-0.85 BGN / l, at levels 0.50 - 0.55 BGN / l price at the beginning of May.

The price of dairy products is also affected by the increased price of imported milk. It was a common practice of Bulgarian producers to import cheap subsidized milk from Hungary or Germany, but at the moment the prices of raw materials there are quite high.

Dairy farmers are pushing for a completely new strategy for the development of the industry. Currently, the trend is for people to buy more and more expensive dairy products and for producers to receive less and less for their labor.

All profits in the chain remain in the hands of milk resellers and this has a detrimental effect on the entire sector.

The increase in the prices of dairy products is to some extent dictated by the fact that there is no development on the issue of the loans that the Agriculture Fund has granted for feeding and preserving the herds.

Next week, representatives of the Bulgarian Association of Dairy Producers and Dairy Producers will meet with the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Prof. Dimitar Grekov.

During the meeting, Minister Grekov's promise for subsidies for dairy farmers on a livestock basis will be discussed.
