Native children between the ages of six and ten do not drink enough milk and dairy products, according to research by nutritionists. That is why the program was created School milko, with the help of which the students to increase the intake of dairy foods and calcium, respectively.

In connection with the program, every day the children in the schools will be provided with 250 milliliters of fresh milk or its equivalents / two hundred milliliters of yogurt, thirty grams of cheese or yellow cheese /. The acceptance of documents for the farmers who will be involved in the project starts today.

The program School milk is worth eight million levs. It is for educational rather than social purposes. The purpose of the scheme is not to meet the needs of children for dairy products, as this would be impossible given the limited funding.

The idea is rather for the scheme to instill in students a more serious attitude towards healthy eating, as there have been quite disturbing trends in this regard recently.

According to nutritionists, Bulgarian children are far from the standards for intake not only of milk, but also of fruits and vegetables.

We have quite low consumption of milk and dairy products, respectively very low intake of calcium in childhood and B vitamins, commented Prof. Veselka Duleva to BTV.

The expert specified that in children from 6 to 10 years the consumption of milk should be up to four hundred milliliters per day.

The scheme School milk is designed specifically for students in the age group in question and is funded by the European Union. It will also include visits to farms.

Thanks to the program, students from the schools that have joined it will receive from the subsidized products, and this will happen only during the school days. The milk offered to the students must be in a disposable package for each child separately.

The idea is the program School milk to help dairy farmers by compensating to some extent for their losses from the Russian embargo.
