Recently, sushi is becoming increasingly popular in Bulgaria. The Japanese specialty has earned the reputation of a delicious but also useful culinary challenge for taste buds.
Whatever you've heard, however, it's worth knowing that according to recent research driedmade from raw fish can be infected with a parasite that attaches to the gut, causing severe pain, vomiting and fever. In the last two weeks, dozens of patients have been admitted with similar symptoms in several Western European hospitals, the Independent reports.
Studies of the inside of the gut have shown that a worm-like parasite, known in medicine as the anaximal nematode, has attached to them. The infection, known as anizakiasis, causes severe epigastric pain, vomiting and fever for weeks.
Such symptoms were not known to most physicians, but the condition was described in the Japanese medical literature before sushi gained worldwide popularity. Research on the subject has shown that the infection has become more widespread in Europe in the last five years, but due to the fact that after a certain period of illness it subsides, the condition has not been given enough attention.
Now, however, due to the change in eating habits, anizakiasis is an increasingly common disease in Western countries. Fortunately, the disease is treatable. After the worm is removed, the symptoms subside. However, the parasite can cause a number of health problems. Because of this, patients may experience allergic symptoms such as angioedema, urticaria and anaphylaxis.
Patients with anizakiasis are characterized by gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, as well as complications such as digestive bleeding, intestinal obstruction, perforation and peritonitis. Those infected with the parasite can also have an extremely low temperature.
The lacquer warns that in case of such symptoms a specialist should be visited immediately, because the sooner the dangerous parasite is removed, the less likely it is that complications will occur.
