Eggs are extremely useful. Their yolks contain many vitamins and minerals, and proteins are a source of essential amino acids. They are also considered a source of youth. However, vegans refuse to eat them.

This is explained on the one hand by the fact that the egg actually represents an unfertilized egg. On the other hand, they do not approve of the way birds are kept.

In our country, laying hens are raised mainly in two ways - floor and cage.

In floor rearing, hens are reared in huge halls, mostly without windows, with artificial lighting. According to European regulations, up to 9 hens can be kept per square meter. However, producers construct more than one platform in a hall, and thus the number of birds per square meter can reach 18.

Thus, in only one such room the number of raised birds exceeds 5 thousand. In this situation, birds cannot create a hierarchy and order of feeding, which leads to behavioral disorders such as feather plucking and cannibalism. There are thousands of cases of chickens that have died from the stress of being raised this way.

Cell growth takes place in small battery cells. Since 2012, there has been a ban on the sale of eggs from hens reared in this way. The cages provide the bird with a space of up to 750 sq. Cm and a height of 45 cm. These birds spend their entire lives closed without fresh air, sun and digging in the ground.

In 30% of them, broken bones and wings are observed as a result of living in a narrow space. Many of them have leg ulcers. Their long nails get stuck and torn in the wire mesh on the floor of the cage.

The battery cells are stacked on top of each other in a room with artificial lighting and no windows. In these halls are raised up to 15-20 thousand hens for a period of 1 year. Then they go directly to the slaughterhouse.

The breeding of free, happy hens is also buzzing. Their freedom is limited to 4 square meters when they are outdoors. Then they return to the halls, equipped with multi-storey structures with all the "extras" - nests, tees, landing rods.

Each egg in the store has a red stamp on the shell. It contains a certain code. By the first digit you can find out about the system of raising the hen.

Code 0 - eggs from hens reared in organic farming;

Code 1 - eggs from hens, with free breeding and access to open spaces;

Code 2 - hen eggs, floor rearing;

Code 3 - hen eggs, cell breeding.

Code 1BG02222, for example, means that this is a Bulgarian egg laid by free-range hens with access to open spaces, produced by an establishment registered under number 02222.

Another dark side of egg production affects male chicks. They have no future. As soon as they hatch, the employees check whether they are male or female, as the male chicks are separated from the females and simply discarded, ground alive for manure or pet food. Nobody needs them because they don't gain weight fast enough and don't lay eggs.

The bad thing is that even if we buy only eggs from organic, organic farming or happy hens, the rest are inevitably present everywhere - in ready meals, restaurants, etc.
