June blanc is a popular grape variety that is actively used in the production of fresh high quality wines. It is grown significantly in Italy, where it is known as Trebbiano. It is also common in France, where it is called Ugni Blanc and Saint Emilion. It is found in Canada, USA (California), Argentina, Spain, Portugal, Mexico, South Africa, Greece and Moldova. In Bulgaria this variety is zoned. The plantations are typical mainly for the lands around Bourgas and Pomorie.
June blanc it has an oval and broad leaf that is five-parted. Its surface is covered with moss. Large and triangular teeth are observed on it. Initially, the leaves are greenish, but with the onset of the autumn months it begins to turn yellow. The color of this variety is bisexual. The cluster is relatively large, cone-shaped.
It has a not very long, thick handle that is tough and hard. You will recognize June blanc by its greenish almost yellow grain. It is small and rounded. Its flesh is juicy, with an unobtrusive taste. It is covered with a transparent, tough skin. Quality white table wines and wine distillate are obtained from the grains. In Bulgaria, the material is used in the production of brandy. It is often part of blended wines. In France, it is widespread in the Cognac region. The material is used in the production of the famous French cognac.
June blanc grows best in sandy-clay soils. Thanks to them, this variety can reveal its greatest charm. It is among the wine varieties that ripen relatively late. Usually the grape harvest occurs in the first days of October. If June blanc is grown in suitable conditions, it grows quickly. It is characterized by high yields. On average, up to 1,500 kilograms of grapes are produced from one decare.
Reaching consumer maturity, June Blanc already has about 20 percent sugar. At that time its acidity was also high. A positive feature of June Blanc is that droughts do not affect it. However, low temperatures do not have a positive effect on the variety and at such values it can freeze. Otherwise, another positive feature of June Blanc is that the grain does not crack and almost does not rot.
History of June Blanc
There are serious disputes about the homeland of June Blanc. Some believe it is France. However, extensive plantations of it are present in Tuscany. Which leads many to argue that this is where its roots should be sought. June Blanc is one of the varieties with a long history. It is known that it was known to people in Roman times. However, its official description was made much later.
Old chronicles show that it was described in the early fourteenth century by the Italian botanist Pierre Crecenzi. Over time, the variety, which was initially popular only in France and Italy, gained great popularity and was transferred to many other countries. In the past, it was believed that adding the variety to some red wines improved their color qualities as well as their durability. Today, however, winemakers are not of this opinion.
Characteristic of June blanc
June blanc gives light, fine and fresh wines that have an unobtrusive aroma with floral notes. The soft and refined taste is immediately recognized by every wine lover. The color of June Blanc is light to straw yellow. The balanced delicate taste is quickly felt. Some of the wines have a hint of fruit, reminiscent of citrus fruits such as lemon or grapefruit. They do not improve the quality during aging and therefore, aging is not recommended.
Serving in June blanc
If you have decided to serve several types of wine in one evening, it is best to start with light and light wines. Following this rule, June Blanc should be served first. When serving, the temperature of the wine should be between 8 and 10 degrees. Serve the wine in glasses, specially selected for light and young wines. A tulip cup does a good job.
