One of the most advertised products are detergents, powders and fabric softeners. An alternative to the chemicals we use to clean our homes and wash our clothes is currently entering the market. These are soap nuts. They are not nuts in the true sense of the word and are not edible.

Soap nuts are obtained from the soap tree / Sapindus mukorossi /, which grows in India and Nepal. The soap tree is really unusual because it actually produces soap. The ripe fruit is harvested, the nut is separated from the skin and the skin itself is dried in the sun. Exactly these shells are the soap nuts.

When the fruit falls to the ground, local farmers harvest it, remove the skin and dry it in the sun. The use of any chemicals or harmful substances is avoided. Soap nuts have been used for hundreds of years in India for washing clothes.

Composition of soap nuts

Soap nuts are a completely ecological product. Their properties are due to the saponins contained in them. After rinsing, these saponins are released into the water. They are completely harmless to the environment. There are no separate artificial flavors, phosphates, foaming agents or other synthetic materials.

Soap nuts are just entering our country. They can be purchased from specialized and organic stores. The price for 1 kg of soap nuts is about BGN 25. This amount is enough for washing for one year.

Of course, smaller packages are also sold, as the price for 200 g is between BGN 4-6. Usually soap nuts are sold with small bags of natural fabrics. Soap nuts are stored in a cool place.

Soap nuts are used to make natural detergents. The saponins in the nuts dissolve at a temperature of 30 degrees. They are extremely easy to use. As mentioned, soap nuts are sold in bags.

For washing in the washing machine, put 5-6 halves of soap nuts in the bag, tie it and add to the laundry. When washing below 60 degrees, the shells can be reused. It is not necessary to use fabric softener when washing with soap nuts. Since they have no smell, you can add a little essential oil to the washing machine.

Soap nuts and soapy liquid can be used for washing all kinds of surfaces, in the dishwasher, for bathing, washing dishes. Prepare dishwashing detergent by soaking 100 g of finely chopped nuts in three liters of water.

Bring the mixture to a boil and cook for 10 minutes. Pour the mixture into a bottle and use it to wash the dishes. If you use a dishwasher, put the nuts in place of the tablet.

The soapy water that is extracted from soap nuts can be used to clean the kitchen, children's room, bathroom, floor. The effect is as good as when cleaning with less safe chemicals.

To clean windows and glass, fill an empty spray bottle with 2 cups of water, 1 tbsp. liquid from soap nuts and 1 tbsp. vinegar. With the resulting mixture, clean the windows as usual.

You can use the soap liquid as a mosquito repellent. Spray your hands, feet and face with it.

Use the soapy liquid to wash your pet's fur; as a shampoo; for cleaning jewelry. To clean your jewelry you need to soak it in the liquid for a few minutes. Soap nuts are also used to wash fruits and vegetables. It is enough to leave them for 10 minutes in the soapy liquid, then rinse them with clean water.

Soap nuts have a great advantage over known detergents because they are biodegradable, antibacterial and inexpensive. They do not damage fabrics suitable for washing silk and cashmere, as well as for hand washing.

Soap nuts have a proven hypoallergenic effect and can be used in allergic conditions. They are extremely suitable for babies and people with sensitive skin.
