One of the most advertised products are detergents, powders and fabric softeners. An alternative to the chemicals we use to clean our homes and wash our clothes is currently entering the market. These are soap nuts. They are not nuts in the true sense of the word and are not edible.
Soap nuts are obtained from the soap tree / Sapindus mukorossi /, which grows in India and Nepal. The soap tree is really unusual because it actually produces soap. The ripe fruit is harvested, the nut is separated from the skin and the skin itself is dried in the sun. Exactly these shells are the soap nuts.
When the fruit falls to the ground, local farmers harvest it, remove the skin and dry it in the sun. The use of any chemicals or harmful substances is avoided. Soap nuts have been used for hundreds of years in India for washing clothes.
