The results of a study cited by UPI show that one of the most popular artificial sweeteners, Truvia, is a likely insecticide.

The new study shows that fruit flies that consumed the sweetener lived 5.8 days, while flies that did not taste the artificial sweetener lived between 38.6 and 50.6 days.

"I feel like this is my simplest study, but it's actually the most significant," said study leader Sean O'Donnell, an expert on biology and biodiversity at Drexel University in Philadelphia.

The co-author of the study is Daniel Marenda, whose idea is to study the properties of the artificial sweetener Truvia.

"My son Simon asked me if we could test the effect of different types of sugar and sugar substitutes on flies, and I said yes," Marenda said.

Millions of people use this sweetener in their coffee and tea, and Truvia is considered a substitute for sugar and masks the bitter taste of drinks.

The results of the study are published in PLoS ONE.

Sweeteners in Bulgaria are permitted for use in the preparation of food and beverages, and their regulation is regulated by Ordinance 8 on the requirements for the use of food additives, introduced on April 16, 2002.

The ordinance specifies the permitted sweeteners and the maximum quantity whose use is permitted.

For aspartame (E951), for example, the maximum permitted amount is 600 milligrams per liter of soft drinks or some other type of beverage.

For sucralose (E955), the maximum permitted amount is 300 milligrams per liter or kilogram of food and drink.

The permitted concentration of cyclamen is 2500 milligrams per kilogram and of saccharin - 3000 milligrams per kilogram.

One of the reasons why the national drink of Bulgaria - boza, can not sour for two weeks, is the cheap price of sweeteners and their strength per unit volume. Sugar is not present in the boza sold commercially. It contains a mixture of acesulfame K, cyclamate, aspartame and saccharin.
